Resumen

GRATEROL, Gloria. Citizenship: Past and Present. Ensayos Históricos [online]. 2009, vol.21, n.21, pp. 33-45. ISSN 1315-0049.

Citizenship, as term and expression, has marked a long historical path. Its beginning and representations have allowed different ways adapting different meanings. As a good and educated person, inhabitant in any city, the Citizen begins their participation on modern debates as a sovereign with some public responsibilities. The “Court of Cadiz” promoted citizen participation in that which belongs to everybody the “res publica”. Today citizenship is placed on different paradigms. Today-communities crystallize, from their ideological point of view, the communitarian perspectives that put in risk participation into local politics. Community realities that are from citizen right are contrasted from the ways public sphere are understood and played as socially as politically.

Palabras llave : Citizenship; political representativity; citizenship paradigms in Latin America.
